HISTORICAL ITEM

Ardglass Community Centre & Youth Club Chairman’s Report at the first AGM
 May / June  2001

Exceptionally this report covers a period of longer than one year, namely from December 1999 to 5th April 2001, due to the time required to refurbish the Community Centre. The terms of reference of the elected committee were as follows:

·        To be responsible for the Youth Club and Community Centre

·        To refurbish the Community Centre.

·        To re-activate and manage the Community Centre and the Youth Club.

·        To make the Youth Club and the Centre self-financing.

·        To pay a nominal rent to the parish if and when practicable.

The parish provided £30,000 to cover the refurbishment and start up costs. Details of the expenditure can be seen in the treasurer’s report. In general the work covered the repairs to windows and doors, renewal of lighting, installation of CCTV and intruder alarm, and interior decoration.

The committee was very fortunate to be able to appoint Teresa Henvey, in association with SEELB, as Youth Leader. She was later joined by Elaine Feenan, as assistant youth leader. Recently Edel Laverty joined the Centre as administrator. The post of caretaker remains vacant.

Having established the basis for the Youth Club it was left to the youth leader to organise an extensive range of activities for both the junior and senior groups. (See separate report of youth leader)

In addition to the long-standing bowling and badminton activities the committee organised additional activities, including flower arranging, first aid classes, yoga, and Irish dancing classes. The other groups using the facilities include the Parent Support Group, Weight Watchers, the Legion of Mary and Ardglass Development Association.

Since obtaining an entertainment license various other activities being planned.

In general, the evenings in the Centre are fully utilised, but that leaves the Centre under utilised in the mornings, afternoons and weekends. There is great potential for daytime sports and social activities at the weekends. The rental charges are kept very low to encourage the use of the centre for birthday parties and discos. All normal activities are insured by the Centre.

Where as membership of the Youth Club was essential for operational reasons, payment for membership of the Community Centre was not welcomed. Part of the reason for this membership fee was to pay for insurance and it will now be proposed to add this cost to the rental charges. In general the outlook for the Centre and the Youth Club is good but very dependent on willing volunteers.
