Walks in the Ardglass Area
(Part of the Ulster Way)

Sheepland to Ballyhornan
5km; 2 hrs; moderate; rough coastal path

Take the A2 north from Ardglass to Ardtole, a distance of 1 km. Turn right onto a quiet tarmac road, and follow it in a north-easterly direction for 2km until a sign posted path is found leading to St Patrick's Well on the shoreline.

1.There is no organised parking at this point and care should be taken not to obstruct the road or gates

2. The ancient custom is to cast cloths upon the waters of St Patrick's Well. The route from the well follows the coastline northwards, passing a strange rock formation on the first headline called St Patrick’s Road where the Saint is said to- have landed on his return from the Isle of Man. Stiles have been provided to cross the fence lines running down to the shore

3. Sheepland is a natural harbour of former local importance. Adjacent is an interesting old corn kiln and mill with surrounding cottages

4.Care should be taken in negotiating the steep grassy banks near this point. In damp conditions it is easy to take a tumble and the area is remote

5. Guns Island shelters the shore. It is said to get its name from a cannon once found washed up from a shipwreck

6. Ballyhoran is a pleasant small seaside village with an unspoilt sandy beach. A ford leads from the village to Guns Island, which you can walk to, negotiable at low water spring tides.

Killough Coastal Path
6.4 km;2 hours 30 minutes

Starting point Scordin car park and picnic site. Please do not take your car past this point. Walk towards the old Coastguard Station. Leave the tarmac road as sign-posted and use the stile provided. To gain access to the park field follow the grass track seaward around the perimeter down a steep bank, as directed, an the foreshore. Follow the path as marked, crossing paths and over several stiles until the path reaches the Point Road near St John's Point Lighthouse.

Turn right and continue past the Rossglass Road South, along the Point Road back towards to Killough. Turn right again after you enter the village, taking the Shore Road to the car park.

BALLYHORNAN COASTAL PATH

9.6 km; 3 hours

Starting point car park on Killard Road, Ballyhoran. Walk towards the beach, down along the foreshore. A short path takes you up a bank onto the Rocks Road. Turn left and continue along the foreshore and grass paths over stiles and around several headlines. Just past a holy shrine which marks St Patrick's Well, the path leaves the foreshore at this point and leads up a laneway towards the Sheepland Road.*

At Sheepland Road turn left and continue past the Ardtole Road until you meet the Strangford Road. Turn right towards and through Chapletown. Finally turn right, into Killard Road through the village of Ballyhornan and back to the car park

* Shortened Route - At Sheepland Road turn right, then left towards the Old Mill and follow the lane straight on to Chapletown. Complete the walk by turning right on the Strangford Road and continue as described above.
